Don't know a gif from a jpg? Below is a short list
of graphic formats, their file extensions, and a brief description of their use.
- .jpg -
Joint
Photographic Experts Group
JPG images can be used for Emails, Forums, printing, and Web sites depending on
the size of the image. As jpg images are compressed in file size, they
degrade in quality.
Usage:
.jpg images are generally used for images that contain more
then 256 colors, such as photographs. Compatible with all graphics software.

Graphics Interchange Format
GIF images should be used for Emails, Forums, and Web sites. They are small,
very compatible, and load very fast for the end viewer.
Usage:
For the most part, .gif images are used for images that contain less then
256 colors, such as clipart. Generally not suitable for photographs.
Compatible with all graphics software.
- .eps-
Encapsulated PostScript
EPS vector files can be printed at high-resolution of 300 dpi and they can
be resized to any size needed without losing quality. You can also change
the colors using a vector image editing program. Compatible with programs
such as Corel Draw, Adobe illustrator and other vector based programs.
Usage
:
.eps images are generally used for printing and editing needs, similar to .wmf
but more editing options.
- .png
- Portable Network Graphics
PNG was initially developed to replace Gif formatted on the
internet. PNG supports palette-based (palettes of 24-bit RGB colors) or
grayscale or RGB images. PNG was designed for transferring images on the
internet. It is a lossless format. Usage: Can be used for lossless
image editing. However, it is not a format that is compatible with all
internet browsers and file sizes can be restrictive for internet use.
- .wmf -
Windows Metafile
WMF vector files are very flexible and small in file size. You can resize,
change colors, and print .wmf files with perfect results. Compatible with
programs such as Corel Draw, Adobe illustrator and other vector based
programs.
Usage:
.wmf images are generally used for printing and editing needs.

.tiff - Tagged
Image File Format
Tiff is a
file format for mainly storing images, including photographs and line art.
It is not compatible with web browsers and is generally a large file size. A
.tiff file is a lossless format, that does not lose quality as it is
edited. Compatible with most graphic programs such as Photo Shop, Paint shop
Pro, etc.
Usage:
.tiff images are generally used for archiving photos and other graphics.
They may also be used when editing master graphic files without quality
loss.
